The genius of this piece is so subtle that non-Touhou fanatics would miss it. In two aesthetics: First, the genius is in the subtle macabre and horror elements like the gritty watercolor hues; the gritty textures; the messy-styled lines like dirty clothes or age-worn clothes; and the creepy Art Nouveau decor in the scythe. The scythe almost looks like it belongs in Gustave Doré's illustrations of "Inferno"(Dante Alighieri). Second is the knowledge of the Touhou universe, where Onozuka is much older than Chen since Chen came after Ran Yakumo, who came after Yukari Yakumo(who may be as old as Yamaxanadu).
This is pure genius!
