A paladin is a knight who swears his life to the holy cause. Basically a holy knight. But in the current usage, it can as well describe a virtuous knight who fights for the weaks, defends the good cause, and so on, without necessary being holy.

Yes, I did mean to reference Spoony's Ultima 9: Ascension review.
