Indeed, the looks and popularity of the car are what makes them so expensive. Spec wise, the car was never really that impressive, being only at best respectable in the early 80s when it was produced and sold (1981 to be exact). In the back to the future movies, the cars had to have their engine replaced by a Lamborghini (or Ferrari can't remember which it was) engine just to get the thing past 88 miles per hour and perform with the expectations for the audience. It was heavy, as the body was made out of steel, which I believe had grown out of practice by the time it was produced. But it's popularity soared with the futuristic looks of the car by its inclusion in the back to the future trilogy and continues to exhibit a high level of popularity as the years went by. DMC, DeLorean Motor Company, was disbanded after some legal issues involving the nature of the production of the cars and the owner's involvement in some drug related issue if I remember correctly. Anyways, the point is, the DeLorean DMC-12 was the only car produced by the manufacturer. In 1995, some dude from Texas decided to bring back the DeLorean name, DMC, and the company now maintains and supplies replacement parts for any DeLoreans left out in the road. They even sold "new" cars that were really modified DeLoreans that they could get their hands on. These models featured a stainless steel body, new advanced optional features such as GPS, and were even fitted with the "Stage 2" engine. The S2 engine gave the car slightly better performance than the original make, the engine was Cadillac in origin. Well, the history of the car is fascinating, if I had the money, I'd love to go out and buy this car. I mean, it's a freaking time machine!!! Awesome car, and I really like the picture too! There were rumors awhile back in 2008-2009 that the new DMC company was interested in taking up Pontiac Solstice's (which stopped production due to the auto crisis and eventually resulted in Pontiac being no more) and reproducing them in the DMC name. I don't think that ever happened unfortunately, I never heard anything else about that...
